HVAC in your home

Like most things, heating units unexpectedly breakdown. It always seems to be at the worst time too. For example, my heating unit broke down right in the middle of a snow storm.  After that experience I learned that I need to take better care of my unit. I do have a maintenance contract with my heating provider. Although this is great and helps to keep my system up and running, I still run my own tests. These tests include, checking the air filters, listening for strange noises, and the air flow. I check the filters to make sure they are not clogged. If the filters become too clogged with dust and dirt then the heating system will not work correctly. The air quality will decrease and my heating unit will need to work harder. I listen for strange noises because these could mean a mechanical problem. Hissing, squealing, or gurgling can all be signs of an internal problem. Finally I check the airflow in my home to make sure enough heat is coming out. If there is not enough heat coming out this most likely means that there is a big problem with your heating unit. I learned if I find one of these problems I can then call my heating provider. If a problem is caught early on then it will lower the risk of a bigger problem coming about. I do not try to fix these problems on my own. I save that work for the professional technicians. I am no handyman but can diagnose a problem with my heating unit.

Ductwork issues

Ductwork is a problem. Ductwork requires a lot of maintenance. Dust gathers in the ducts quite quickly. You do not want to leave the dust in your system either. When the dust is in your ducts, it circulates in your air. People with asthma and allergies suffer. Asthma attacks and irritated allergies are more likely to occur. Also dusty air causes eyes to water and irritated nasal passages. You air quality is quite poor. Most homeowners think that their air is too dry. Investing in a humidifier is expensive and not always necessary. The dirty ductwork is most likely the cause. A HVAC technician can easily clean your ductwork. They have a special cleaning system to dust your ducts. They wipe and scrub your ductwork with a variety of different brushes. Ductwork can get damaged in the installation process however. Some technicians are not careful. Ductwork is very fragile and can get cracks in it easily. Cracks in the ductwork lead to the home losing air. This is the number one reason energy bills are too high. Your ductwork can have leaks and cracks in it. Overtime it is very likely that cracks will develop. However, most cracks occur due to a person cleaning the ductwork too roughly. Have your technician be careful and not damage your system. Also most ductwork is not in a straight line. When your ductwork twists and turns it is more likely to crack and break. The ductwork should have been installed better. Ductwork needs to be maintained by a qualified technician. If you cannot handle ductwork maintenance then look into ductless units for your home.

Heat in the cold winter

In the winter I am mainly in one room of my house. I wake up in the morning and exercise in the living room. I do skipping, tuck jumps and push ups. I then shower and go back into the room to do homework. I am a college student that lives at home. I did all my schoolwork in that one room. I usually have three hours worth of homework everyday. After I do my schoolwork I reward myself with watching a movie. I love watching movies. I constantly buy new movies and rent new movies. I am always looking for a new good movie to watch. I will watch any genre too. I sit in my living room for a long time doing different activities. In the summer I go outside after my work is done. I go for long walks and swim in my pool. In the winter I do not like to leave the house. Where I am from it gets very cold out. Last winter the temperatures drop down to the negatives. My car is completely iced over and will not start. I have found that when my home is not warm I am not productive. Exercising is difficult and doing homework is difficult. That is why I invested in a gas furnace. The gas furnace heats my home very nicely. What is nice is that this furnace only has to heat the one room. I keep my living room sealed off to be energy efficient. Have your local HVAC technician install a furnace in your home if you only stay in one room.

Boilers in a basement

I work at a gymnastics studio. I teach classes and I take a gymnastics class. I have been instructing for about eleven years and taking for seventeen years. I love gymnastics and I am very knowledgeable about the sport. The gymnastics studio is in the basement of a grocery store. This works out well in the summer. The basement is nice and cool. We do not need to purchase a cooling system because it is so cold. The students never get overheated. Also when you are doing more complicated stunts like me, it is nice to not be so sweaty. In the summer the studio is nice and cool. In the winter it is difficult to tumble. The basement is so cold that the students have trouble doing their tricks. I know that if I get cold my muscles tense up. I am more likely to get injured and really hurt myself. If I want to do any complicated gymnastics moves I need to be very warm. I have a few girls in my class. One of the girls likes to talk a lot. When she talks we are all standing still and getting cold. I then cannot do my gymnastics tricks as well. The studio needs a quality heating system. The grocery store should look into buying a boiler. The boiler can be used to heat the entire building. The boiler can even be stored in the basement with the gymnastics studio. The boiler would heat only in the winter and keep the students warm. Contact your HVAC technician about a boiler if you need to heat a large space.

Whole-home dehumidifiers are a great investment.  You won’t ever need to deal with the mess of a portable unit.  There will be none of the risk associated with standing water.  These rewarding units incorporate directly into your HVAC system.  They operate silently.  They maintain humidity levels within the ideal range.  Living with excess moisture in the home is a mistake. That sticky, clammy feeling during the summer is the result of high humidity.   A whole-home dehumidifier pulls excess moisture from the air.  You’ll feel cooler at higher temperatures.  You can turn up the thermostat a few degrees.  This promotes energy savings without giving up on comfort.  Controlling excessive moisture also offers health benefits.  Mold, mildew, and dust mites thrive in high humidity.  Airborne spores, pests, and bacteria irritate symptoms of allergies and asthma.  Dust mites love warm, damp air, and will quickly increase in number.  This means more dust mite feces as well.  Elevated humidity levels also encourage cockroaches.  People who suffer from respiratory issues will breathe easier when air is kept cool and dry. An effective dehumidifier will protect belongings and furnishings against the damage of moisture. Books, clothes, wood furnishings, and some food products will remain in better condition.  These items will avoid unpleasant smells and mold.  You’ll enjoy a more comfortable home, and benefit from energy savings.  You’ll sleep better and feel more productive.  While most modern air conditioners help with filtration and humidity control, these systems are often insufficient.  Adding a dehumidifier  to your HVAC system will improve the usability of your indoor space.

Large HVAC units

The rewards of a commercial HVAC maintenance agreement are ongoing.  You’ll see an improvement in both your bottom line and productivity.  The most expensive method of HVAC management is reactive service.  Waiting for heating and cooling equipment to fail is a guaranteed disruption.  You’ll face unnecessary costs, and be inconvenienced.  You also run the risk of property damage and safety issues.  The investment into proactive service is significantly lower than a sudden repair.  Without regular inspection, small flaws within the HVAC system go unnoticed.  They impact efficiency, and the unit will cost more to operate.  These minor issues often lead to much more extensive damage.  If caught early on, the needed adjustment is usually quick and inexpensive.  When you enroll in a commercial HVAC maintenance plan, your technician will handle everything.  They will alert you when it is time for service.  You can expect quarterly inspections.  They will work around your schedule.  By completing important safety and performance checks, you will be protected from sudden malfunctions and premature system failure.  Factory level efficiency and noise levels will be restored.  They will eliminate the worry of unsafe conditions and promote superior air quality.  You’ll enjoy the benefits of a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable work environment.  The productivity, health, and well-being of occupants is significantly improved.  Sensitive materials and electronics are safeguarded from drastic temperature swings.  Humidity is properly controlled, eliminating the problems of excessive moisture.  Your HVAC technician will make sure your system costs less to operate and delivers consistent performance.  They can also give you some idea of expected service life, and alert you to problems with energy waste.

Plumbing service

It’s easy to take hot water for granted. You turn on the faucet, and there is a ready supply. When something goes wrong, it is a major disruption. You rely on hot water for showering, washing clothes and dishes, and a long list of every day tasks. If you are suddenly without hot water, you may be tempted to rush out and grab a new water heater. You will live with your new water heater for quite a few years. Mistakes in sizing and installation can add up to great deal of wasted money. It is worth taking a bit of time to select the right unit for your household needs. Start with fuel type. When replacing a water year, it is usually wise to stay with the same fuel type. Switching to a new fuel type can be costly. However, if you are unhappy with your current fuel type, look into possibilities. You may have electric or natural gas accessible. You may have some simple options. You also need to decide on the type of water heater. Most people choose from the traditional storage tank varieties. While these are all basically a steel cylinders, there are still important features. Warranty conditions can vary greatly. The size of the heating element is crucial to the amount of hot water available. Superior insulation will save you money on wasted energy. Size is important. The unit must be adequate to meet your household demand for hot water. You must also take into consideration the available space for installation. 40 to 60 gallon storage tank-type water heaters require a clearance of 60 inches of height and 24 inch width.

Working on your heater

On a cold and blustery night I was trudging home from work so I could get warm and relax. To my disappointment when I got home, I found out the heater was broken. The inside of my house was nearly the same temperature as the outside! MY family was all bundled up in blankets and jackets. I called my heating provider right away. They said it would be a few hours before a technician could come as there were breakdowns all over town. My family and I ended up building a fire and huddling together. We told stories and drank warm drinks. Finally the technician showed up. He look exhausted and probably wanted to just go home. He went to check our unit and found the problem right away. He had the unit back up and running in under an hour. I asked him what I could look for next time to prevent this. He told me to make sure I change my air filters. The filters can become easily clogged and if they are not changed then they will cause a big problem for the heating unit. Next he told me to listen for strange noises. Any sound such as a squealing, hissing or gurgling could mean something is mechanically wrong with the unit. Finally he told me to check and make sure enough heat was coming out. If the heat flow was not good enough then there was something wrong with the unit. He said to make sure to contact the heating provider right away so that these problems did not grow.

Putting in A/C

My friend has lived down south all of his life. As you may know the temperatures, especially during the summer, can become unbearably hot. I was surprised to learn that she has never had an air conditioning unit. She said she was trying to save money and had a few fans strategically placed around her house. I was in shock and kept questioning her about how she survived the scorching weather! She did tell me she was giving in this summer and buying an air conditioning unit. She explained last summer became so hot that she would not stay at her house that much! She told me that she was going to invest in a central air conditioning unit for her house. As the installation process was going on she came to visit me. The installation process only took a few days. When she returned to her house she could not believe the difference. She said she did not know how she survived in the heat all of those years. Now she never leaves her home! I went to go visit her and her home was much more comfortable. I remember I would avoid going back to her house because it was so hot. Back when she only had fans, her house was so humid that I could not stand to be in there. However, now I wanted to go as much as I could to enjoy the air conditioning. I just hope that my friend does not stay inside too much and miss all of the great summer weather.

water heating options

When you need a new water heater, you may be tempted to grab one off the shelf.  You might think there is little difference between models.  You may even choose based on the lowest price.  If you consider the importance of hot water in your daily life, the investment into a new water heater is extremely important.  You might want to put some thought into your selection.  Some things to think about are fuel type, availability and cost. The fuel type or energy source of the water heater will impact annual operation costs.  It will affect the size needed and energy efficiency.  Appropriate sizing is crucial.  To supply enough hot water for your household use, you need an adequately sized water heater.  An energy efficient model will save you a great deal of money.  You may want to consider ENERGY STAR rated products.  Cost will also be a factor.  You want to think about more than the purchase price.  The annual operating cost is more important.  You hope to enjoy the benefits of your purchase for quite a few years.  The fuel type of the water heater will limit your choices.  Electric water heaters are common and widely available.  There are electric storage, tankless, and heat pump water heaters.  There are also a limited number of conventional storage water heaters that rely on fuel oil.  They are often used in combination with heating systems.  If you have a geothermal heat pump, you can combine this with your water heating needs.  Natural gas and propane are also possible fuel options.  Solar energy is more popular in the Southwest.
