I am not very thrilled about replacing expensive items in my house. Especially when I know that the replacing could have been prevented. There have been several large purchases that I have made over the last few years. The first one was a new pool liner. The liner on the pool was punctured by a tree limb. We had a violent storm this spring and it knocked over a tree in my yard. I was planning on cutting down the tree, but I never got around to it. The fact that this happened made me very angry. I also have to purchase a new HVAC system. The reason I need a new HVAC system is because my HVAC technician installed the wrong sized furnace in my house. The improperly sized furnace cycled on and off too often. This caused the heat exchanger to crack. Replacing just the heat exchanger is just as expensive as purchasing a new heater. I decided to research some different heating and cooling systems.I think that I am going to install a geothermal heat pump. They are quite expensive to install, but they last for a very long time. If the conditions are right, it can produce virtually free heating and cooling for your home. I was told that a geothermal heat pump will pay for itself within the first 7 years of operation. The system can last up to 20 years before the pump needs replaced. They pipes in the ground can last up to 50 years before needing replaced. That means that I will not have to replace an expensive item on my HVAC system for at least 20 years.
I have never been a saver, despite growing up in a low-income household. Both of my parents worked 50-60 hours per week just to take care of my two brothers and me. Being the youngest, I never got anything brand new. Every piece of clothing and every toy I had were once my older brothers’. I hated it. I understood it, but I hated it. I was fortunate to get a good job shortly after high school. I bought everything I ever wanted within a few short years. I’m still that way today, except when it comes to boring stuff. My heat pump falls under that category. I have no problem going out and spending a few hundred dollars on a new watch I don’t need, but I cringe when I’m forced to spend 2 grand on a new heat pump. That was my situation last week. I came home from work, loosened my tie and took my suit jacket off. After just a few minutes, I realized my cooling equipment wasn’t functioning properly. I live in an area where it is moderately warm for most of the year so I own a heat pump. A heat pump acts as a heater and an air conditioner, depending on the outside conditions. While I wasn’t happy about spending the money, I arranged for an HVAC technician to come look at my HVAC equipment. I needed to replace it, after all. Within a day, my HVAC provider had installed a new heat pump. It may not be as sexy as a new watch, but at least my house is comfortable.
I hate scheduling appointments. I have a very busy life and it’s hard keeping my schedule straight. Every time I make an appointment for something, I am worried I’m forgetting about something else. Nonetheless, I was watching TV the other day when I realized I was cold even though I was underneath the blanket I had over me. After getting a thicker blanket, I noticed it was much too cold in my house. I grabbed the flashlight and walked downstairs. When I got down there, I didn’t hear my furnace running. Sure enough, when I reached my furnace, I saw that it was off. I have no experience with any heating equipment whatsoever so I decided to call an HVAC business for help. It was very cold outside so I told them it was an emergency situation. They sent an HVAC technician to my house in the middle of the night. I led him downstairs to the furnace. After about 45 minutes, he came back upstairs and asked me where the thermostat was. He waited another 20 minutes just to make sure my furnace was working properly and producing enough heat. He told me my heater was getting quite old and that I should look to have it replaced in the next few years. He did say, however, that he performed a heater repair and everything seemed to be working fine again. I tipped him generously. I’m glad I had the phone number of an HVAC business that offered emergency repair services. I am definitely keeping that number saved in my phone!
I love the summer time. I really enjoy being outside and soaking up the sun and warm weather. However, the one thing that I cannot stand is humidity. The damp air bogs down on me and makes it hard to breathe or do anything. When it is very humid out, I begin to sweat uncontrollably and hate the feeling of the air being heavy. For this reason, I bought the best dehumidifier my air control provider had to offer. A dehumidifier helps to remove the moisture out of the air. This way, when I enter my home when it is humid out I have dry cool air to relax in. The only thing that I have to watch out for is maintaining the unit. If the coils inside of the dehumidifier are not cleaned then they will not collect the moisture properly. Also I need to make sure the unit is emptying the moisture as well. If the moisture becomes backed up then it will either break down or not take the water out of the air efficiently. My wife thinks I am paranoid but I check the unit every other day to make sure it is in working order. As much as I love being outside, the humidity will drive me to stay inside. My air control provider understood my struggles with the humidity and helped me out a lot. They installed the unit properly and come to tune it up right on schedule. I think everyone cannot stand the humidity as much as me but are too afraid to admit it.
I do not know how people survived without a basic heating system. Like most people, I enjoy a warm fire but my gas furnace heats my house wonderfully. When I was growing up my parents had a fireplace that we always used. I really enjoyed the warm relaxing evenings lying in front of it. My parents then decided to get a gas furnace. I could not believe the difference. The entire house was now warm and we barely used our fireplace to heat the family room. It was a great for me to experience the change from one heating system to the other. When I built my own home I did not even install a fireplace. I had the gas furnace installed first. There was no reason for the obsolete technology. However, my wife and I had kids I decided I wanted a fireplace. I wanted them to experience lying in front of the warm fire on a relaxing night. It was interesting to watch them transition. They ended up enjoying the fireplace more than the gas furnace! Sometimes the old things still have a mysterious attraction to them. The only thing is that the gas furnace is much more practical. I can heat every room in my home to the same temperature and not just have one room be warm. I do enjoy having the family all in one room at the same time. The only thing I do not like is wasting money on two heating devices. Although, if it makes my kids happy then I do not care about the cost.
Most people can handle a little heat. Actually most people enjoy when it is somewhat hot out. What a majority of people cannot stand is humidity. When there is so much moisture in the air it not only makes it difficult to breath but it is terribly uncomfortable. Personally I sweat a lot more when the humidity is very high. That is why I invested in a dehumidifier for both my business and my home. First off, I cannot be sweating when I am at work. It makes me feel self-conscious and I cannot be productive. Second, at home I want to be comfortable. I want to be able to come home after a long day of work and relax in some cool dry air. The mugginess of humidity would only upset me. The dehumidifier I invested in for both locations was provided by my air control business. They came simultaneously and installed the systems in the air ducts. These units take the moisture out of the air and deposit the water outside. Once I had it installed, my customers, employees, and family all noticed the difference. It made a big difference in my attitude as well. When I saw this big effect I made sure that the units were always tuned up and working properly. Any slight problem that I sense I call my air control provider right away. This may sound over the top but if the dehumidifier were to break it could cost me a lot of money. These systems have changed my life and made it a lot more enjoyable.
The word emergency can be a bit overused. Getting your coffee and realizing they put hazelnut instead of french vanilla in it isn’t an emergency. It’s unfortunate and may even ruin your commute to work, but it’s not an emergency. However, getting home and realizing your heater isn’t working is most certainly emergency. If you live in a climate where it gets quite cold during the winter, a faulty heater is a really big problem. What if the furnace malfunctions on a holiday or weekend? Do you know a reliable HVAC business that can offer their repair services on such short notice or during non-business hours? If you don’t, you are facing a real emergency. Always check to see if your furnace just needs to be lit. If the pilot goes out, your furnace won’t produce any heat. If it’s an electric furnace or your gas furnace uses an electric component, flip the breaker to see if that solves the problem. If you can’t solve the issue, you need an emergency repair. If you can’t find anyone to fix it, your house will become increasingly colder until it matches the temperature outside. This is when it comes in handy to have a good relationship with an HVAC provider that offers emergency repair services. Hopefully they can come to your house and solve your heating issue. I know I ran into this problem during the winter a few years ago and was fortunate enough to have an HVAC technician at my house within just a few hours. He saved me from a real emergency.
Big buildings can encounter big problems. I remember my buddy bought a business that delivered stone, dirt and mulch. He bought everything. The tractors, trucks and barn were all his. After purchasing, though, he quickly realized the massive barn that housed most of his equipment was deteriorating and needed to be torn down. This was such an unexpected expense. He barely survived financially. I encountered a similar issue when I bought a warehouse for my business. Almost everything had to be replaced. One of the biggest expenses during the renovation process was the heating and cooling equipment. I remember calling the HVAC business and explaining that I wasn’t quite sure how to handle the situation. They sent an HVAC technician out to the warehouse a few days later. He confirmed my suspicions. The entire commercial HVAC system needed to be torn out. The technician said the equipment looked to be almost forty years old. Luckily, the company I called specializes in commercial heating and cooling. They did all of the necessary calculations and found the appropriate equipment for my warehouse. Within a week, I had a brand new heater and air conditioner installed in the main area of the building. I also had a smaller heating and cooling system installed in the office area. The technicians answered all of my questions and even mentioned that their company offers emergency repair services should my heater or air conditioner ever need it. At the end of the day, my warehouse should be set for years to come when it comes to heating and cooling equipment.
It is better to get things done sooner rather than later. For example, when a HVAC unit needs a tune up then it should get done on time. If you were to wait too long to have it tuned up, it will most likely break down and need a repair. Repairs can be costly both monetarily and in time. NO one wants to waste time on something they could have avoided. Most HVAC providers will schedule regular maintenance on your HVAC unit. However, if you cancel the appointment and forget to reschedule it could mean a lot of money lost down the road. Repairs can be a nasty business. For one repairs are usually caused by a small problem that grew into a larger one. This can be very frustrating as an owner of the unit. Next repairs can range from a quick fix to something that may take a few days. Time is money. If you are waiting around for your air control system to be fixed, you are losing a lot of time. Finally, if you neglect to have your unit repaired in a timely fashion you may need to replace your entire unit. Again, this will cost you a lot amount of money. Why spend excess money on a new HVAC unit when it could have lasted ten more years? Make sure you stay on top of your scheduled maintenance. Be in close contact with your HVAC provider to see if there is anything you can do to avoid future breakdowns. You can save a lot of money by being proactive.
I love being in control. Some people think this is a bad thing. I see it differently. I want to control my own fate. What I am doing and where I am going can all be decided by me. I understand this cannot happen with every aspect in my life, but when there is an opportunity I take it. This is why I decided to buy a zone control system for my house. It frustrated me that I had to heat or cool my entire home to one temperature. It was a waste of money! I only went in about five rooms regularly out of the 12 that were in my home. I asked my HVAC provider if there was anything I could do about this. She told me about a zone control system. This system would allow me to control the temperatures for specific rooms. For example, I could set the five rooms I go into at a comfortable temperature and the other rooms to a lower or higher (depending on the season). The HVAC provider explained how this was save me money. My HVAC unit would not be working as hard. This would lower my energy bills. Also I would likely need fewer repairs for my unit. This was due to the fact that with the less stress on the unit, it would not break down as much. I loved the idea of controlling the temperature of each room. I had the unit installed immediately. I can now cross one more thing off my list of things I want to control.
